Cnet Buzz gets into bit-tech

Monday, October 30, 2006

We got a fun plug on Cnet on Friday. The latest Buzz Out Loud podcast has Editors Molly Wood and Veronica Belmont mulling over a couple of stories we've written recently.

Molly concludes that not too many people will be affected by Vista activation after our story on the issue last week, which had some exclusive comment from Microsoft. The girls also agree with our take on the Wii, saying that it can get pretty tiring to play.

Buzz is a pretty good podcast to listen to, so you should check it out. Molly and Veronica seem to like bit-tech quite a bit, so I hope to hear more of bit on the show!

The bit fancy dress krew
Originally uploaded by Wil Harris.
I had a fancy dress Halloween party last night for friends, which turned into a pretty decent occasion. The theme was 'Knights and Wenches' which resulted in some girls dressed very provocatively indeed and, well, you can see for yourself how the bit-tech chaps turned out for the event. Alex did an amazing job cooking, and I did rather well with the cocktails (at least, juding by the amount of people who were thoroughly drunk). More photos on Flickr.

The TWiT saga

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Poor Leo caused something of a storm this week at the suggestion that TWiT might be going the way of the dodo. Thankfully, that's not going to happen.

As TWiT has taken ads, the stakes are a bit higher. No podcast = unhappy advertisers, and that's not what the show needs - especially as we try to establish podcasting as a viable commercial medium, to the benefit of all podcasters out there.

I did make it online to the show that never was, but unfortunately, just me and Leo isn't much of a show. Although maybe it could be, hmm... :o)

To avoid this situation happening again, I know that Leo is hiring a booker to organise guests for the show a couple of weeks in advance, which should mean that there are no worries with keeping things on air. I know that some of the guests have incredibly busy schedules, and having some major advanced notice should mean that you see some of the old favourites a bit more often. Don't despair!

I rang Leo yesterday to say hello and see how he's doing, and things are good - so the TWiT army has nothing to fear.

I personally adore the show and any week I'm not contributing, I'm hitting the refresh button in iTunes to get the show ASAP - just like you guys. Doin' the TWiT is a heck of a lot of fun, even if it does mean staying up until the wee small hours over here in Blighty. Thanks so much for the support you guys have shown - I know it means a lot to Leo.

So, there's a show on Sunday, a post-cruise show the week after and then normal service is resumed the week after that - and I've already booked myself in, so here's to organisation!

Dead MacBook.

Oh dear.

So, a mere 4 weeks ago I bought a new MacBook - shiny white, 2GHz Core Duo, then upgraded it with a 120GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. Absolutely stonking.

Today, Tim, our fantastically talented Tech Ed on bit-tech, threw a cardboard box at me which inadvertantly landed on my cup of coffee, which proceeded to pour all over the poor notebook. Of course, the air vents at the back mean that the coffee was easily able to flow straight on down into the components.

Noooo!

So far, the signs aren't good - not so much as a hint of life. However, I did once pour coffee over a 667MHz G4 PowerBook which did make a recovery after a brief period of flatlining, so I'm optimistic. Otherwise, it's on to Mr Insurance for me - I can't live for long without my baby!

Wish me luck.

CrankyGeeks, Diggnation

Tuesday, October 03, 2006

Just a note to let you guys know that the episode of CrankyGeeks with me on is up on the site. I had a great time with Sebastian, Jim and John, and a big thanks to Annaliza for sorting out the logistics.

There's also a brief mention of me on this week's Diggnation - a quick shout out from Alex, since we had breakfast in San Fran last week. Good stuff!

I filled out the 10 page agreement that means I'm now an official blogger for Weblogs Inc! Looking forward to getting my first post up on Engadget in the next couple of weeks.
